Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has made a strong case in defence of the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new voters register ahead of the December polls.
He believes the modalities prescribed by the CI 126 are workable and are not farfetched.
“It’s important we compile a fresh register again and its very possible. I don’t anticipate any challenges at all. You’ll reckon that even in the last registration exercise 95% of the registrants had to be vouched for,” he told host Kweku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 Fm.
Parliament has approved the controversial C.I 126 for the compilation of a new voters’ register but minority says posterity will judge the House.
The minority which opposed the CI at the Subsidiary legislation committee level did same on Tuesday on the floor and argued the decision by the EC to reject existing voters’ ID card as a primary document for the exercise lacks legal basis.
The C.I. 126, which makes the Ghana Card and the Ghanaian passport the only legal identification documents for registering people in the new biometric voters’ register, was first laid before the House on March 16, this year but was withdrawn and re-laid on two occasions after the Subsidiary Legislation Committee detected some defects in the Instrument on those occasions.
Under the C.I. 126, those who do not have the Ghana Card or Ghanaian passport can still register provided they are able to get two already registered voters to vouch for them.
The approval in Parliament on Tuesday by majority decision, therefore, allows the C.I. 126 to come into force.
